A media console has two jobs: support the way you use the television and visually anchor the screen on the wall. When the console is too narrow, the television can look top-heavy. Measure the television’s actual width
Television sizes are advertised by diagonal screen measurement, not by the cabinet width. Measure from the far left edge to the far right edge of the television. As a visual starting point, many rooms look balanced when the console extends at least several inches beyond the TV on each side. A wider console can work well on a large wall, while a tight alcove may call for a closer fit.
Decide whether the television will sit or mount
If the television will sit on the console, verify the stand-foot spacing, console depth, and manufacturer weight limit. The full base must rest securely on the top. If the television will be wall-mounted, the console still determines the visual center and provides storage, but its top does not carry the TV. Wall mounting should follow the television and mount manufacturers’ instructions and appropriate installation practices.
Set a comfortable viewing height
For most seated viewing, the center of the screen should feel close to eye level rather than forcing the head upward. Sofa height, viewing distance, television size, and personal needs all change the ideal position. Mark the screen outline and console height with painter’s tape, then sit in the primary seat before committing.
Plan the equipment—not just the television
List every device that needs a home: game console, soundbar, receiver, streaming box, router, controllers, remotes, and media. Measure the equipment and allow space for cords and airflow. Closed cabinets create a cleaner look, while open shelves can improve access and ventilation. Verify that remote signals and doors work with your equipment.
Check cable access and outlets
Look for cord openings in the product images and specifications. Note where the wall outlet, data connection, and cable entry sit. A console should not pinch power cords or block a needed outlet. If a soundbar will sit on top, confirm that it will not cover the television’s lower edge or sensor.
